TrueMen Thursdays: Denzel Washington

We all know the amazingly talented Denzel Washington, the actor that incarnated transcendental men such as Malcolm X or Pvt. Trip on Glory. But besides his powerful performances, here at IJORERE we are thoroughly impressed with Denzel's philanthropic resume.

Washington has served as the national spokesperson for Boys & Girls Clubs of America since 1993. As such, he has been featured in several public service announcements and awareness campaigns for the organization.

In mid-2004, Washington visited Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam Houston, where he participated in a Purple Heart ceremony, presenting medals to three Army soldiers recovering in the hospital from wounds they received while stationed in Iraq. He also visited the Fisher House facilities that are also part of Fort Sam Houston, and after learning that additional Fisher House facilities were needed due to exceeded capacities, made a substantial donation to the Fisher House Foundation. Washington's other charity work includes donating $1 million to the Children's Fund of South Africa. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Let's take a look at this handsome, timeless, talented and kind-hearted man.

Whimsical Wednesdays: 5 Whimsical Design Ideas

On this Whimsical Wednesday let's take a look at five super fun ideas for decorating our homes!

1. Colorful Dressers

Create these effects with some latex paint and tape. Don't be afraid to pick bold colors or playful patterns, the whackier the better.

2. Wall text

Use decals or stencils to create this rich look. Make sure you pick a color that will stand out and a font type that's easy to read and not too busy.

3. Book Wall Paper

Use the yellowed pages from old books to create this vintage effect. Don't forget to use a sealant to fix the pages to the wall.

4. Cocktail Ceiling

Wether it's paper umbrellas or the flowers from a lei, you can create this effect with some hot glue and lots of patience.

5. Wall Decals

Add a personalized touch to your rooms by creating a custom decal in vinyl. Many companies will print the design and the installation can be pretty simple too.

ButterFridays!: FuzziBunz Cloth Diapers

Welcome to IjoBABY’s new Friday column, ButterFridays! ButterFridays is a weekly column dedicated to IjoBABY topics. The idea to call our column ButterFridays was evoked by our colorful IjoBABY logo & the day of Friday.

Butterfly logo + Day of Friday = ButterFridays!

This ButterFriday we want to showcase a wonderful brand of cloth diapers: FuzziBunz. Cloth diapers are making a huge comeback! Not only they are more affordable, but they have a much smaller environmental impact, as well as giving you baby maximum comfort and dryness. These practical diapers were invented by a mom and come in different sizes, as well as a "grow with your baby" one size model. Let's take a look at how this diaper works and the happy users enjoying their dry bums!

TrueMen Thursdays: Carlos Arredondo

In the light of devastating events such as the Boston Marathon Bombing, I like to think of a quote by Mr. Rogers that always brings me a little peace:

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”  To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world."

One of these caring people is, without a doubt, Costa Rican-American Carlos Arredondo. The Arredondo family was hit by tragedy when Marine Lance Corporal Alexander Arredondo, was killed in Iraq. Shortly after, Carlos' other son, Brian, committed suicide due to the grief of losing his brother. Fazed with such tragedy, Carlos and his wife Mélida became activists for peace and have had speaking engagements all around the country. Once an illegal immigrant, Arredondo became a U.S. citizen in 2006 and continued on his journey of advocating for peace.

This Monday, Carlos was at the Boston Marathon to cheer on runners from organizations that were honoring his dead sons, and was handing out American flags. When the two bombs were detonated, instead of running to safety, Carlos fled to the aid of the injured, risking his own life. He was photographed helping various victims who were severely injured, including Jeff Bauman, who suffered extensive damage to his legs. Carlos, unfazed by the magnitude of the injury, was determined to save the man's live. Thanks to his courage, he was able to save not only Jeff Bauman, but several other victim's lives as well.

This heart wrenching display of human solidarity inspires not only me, but the whole Ijorere team. Our hearts go to the victims of this tragedy, but also to the people who shine a ray of hope in such dark times.

Whimsical Wednesdays: Inspiring Fashion Models

This Whimsical Wednesday we want to showcase three awe inspiring fashion models. Their talent, uniqueness and versatility makes them some of the most desirable models in the industry and has opened doors for them in movies and television. Let's take a look at some of their bio and work.

1. Gemma Ward

Gemma Ward was born on 3 November 1987 in Perth, Western Australia.  brush with modeling was an accidental one.[She was discovered in 2002, at the age of fourteen, while accompanying her friends to the Australian modelling competition Search for a Supermodel. Although she didn't win the competition, her fragile, unique look, got the attention of a spotter from Vivien's Model Agency who saw her potential and made a show reel. The show reel then landed on the desk of ace model scout David Cunningham from the New York City agency IMG. After a very successful career, Gemma has retired from modeling and focused completely on acting. She has made appearances in films like "The Strangers" and the upcoming "The Great Gatsby".

2. Coco Rocha

Coco Rocha (born Mikhaila Rocha on September 10, 1988) is a Canadian fashion model. Since her debut, Rocha has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including Versace, Americana Manhasset, Balenciaga, Chanel, D&G, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Lanvin, The Gap, Ports 1961, Tommy Hilfiger, Yves Saint Laurent, Esprit, Liz Claiborne, Calvin Klein, Nicole Farhi, DeBeers, Zac Posen, and Rimmel.

Rocha is one of the few models who has spoken out against the prevalence of eating disorders in the modelling industry. In an open letter to The New York Times on her blog, she wrote, "How can any person justify an aesthetic that reduces a woman or child to an emaciated skeleton? Is it art? Surely fashion's aesthetic should enhance and beautify the human form, not destroy it."

3. Chanel Iman

Chanel Iman was born December 1, 1990, in Atlanta, Georgia.  She is the daughter of  China Robinson – a half Korean, half African-American war baby  from Seoul who recently opened up her own Los Angeles fashion store called “The Red Bag Boutique” – and youngest of four. Since her debut in 2006, Chanel has done Cover shoots for magazines all over the world, including Teen Vogue (twice), TIME, i-D, Muse ,POP, Lula, Elle (UK)(Italy), Flare (Italy)(Canada) and Vogue (Korea) just to name a few. Her editorials are almost unnumbered, including American Vogue, Italian Vogue, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, Interview, as well as several campaigns and prestigious fashion shows.

As an advocate for diversity on the runways, Chanel has paved the way for a host of newcomers. Her dream is for advertisers to see the value in booking "color." In many interviews Chanel is asked to give beauty tips and how to's … but when asked what makes someone beautiful her answer is "spirit, confidence and a positive attitude… Being attractive is not about how much make up you wear or how fly you think you have to look. To me being attractive is about glowing; being happy from within because you are free to be yourself…"
