TrueMen Thursdays: Segungele International

Segun Olaleye, popularly known as segun-gele; started as a young inquisitive man always wanting to help his mother look good. Like every other women she would always struggle and fight with her headties, which Segun could put together in no time. Gele tying as a means of lively hood started April of 2003 where a bet lead him to do his first "paid" tie. A prosperous career emerged from this anecdote and now Segun is one of the most sought after make up artists and headtie couturiers in America.

ButterFridays!: Five Trendy Baby Shower Ideas

Welcome to IjoBABY’s new Friday column, ButterFridays! ButterFridays is a weekly column dedicated to IjoBABY topics. The idea to call our column ButterFridays was evoked by our colorful IjoBABY logo & the day of Friday.

Baby Showers are not what they used to. With the boom of social media and gorgeous visual displays roaming around the Internet, our social gatherings have become an amazing outlet for creativity and innovation. Baby Showers are now as cute as they've ever been! This ButterFriday let's celebrate five GRAND trends that are bound to make any baby shower a truly unforgettable IJORERE.

1. Diaper Dinners

Many modern mothers prefer to shop for their own nursery items, or are celebrating baby number three and don't really need another changing table. This is a perfect occasion for a Diaper Dinner. Guests are asked to bring diapers of different sizes as the only gift. We all know if there's one thing you can't have many it's diapers! You can also bring a modern Diaper Cake as a trendy gift.

2. Mini Shower/Sprinkle

Many modern and busy moms can't have the luxury of spending an entire morning or afternoon for a celebration. Sprinkles are perfect for the hectic life of a working mom. This shorter and simple showers are still gorgeous and very emotional; the idea is to not compromise quality, but keep the celebration at a speedy pace.

3. Spa Shower

Being pregnant is no easy thing! Along with the joy of expecting a little one, come the cramps, back aches, exhaustion… should we go on? A Spa Shower is all about spoiling Mom to be. Think of it as the pregnant version of a girls day out; I can speak from experience when I say, many moms will indeed prefer a day of relaxation than a tiresome party they might have to clean up afterwards.

4. Baby Introduction/Sip and See

Many couples are shying away from the traditional "girls-only-mom's-pregnant" Shower. A Baby Introduction -or Seep and See, due to Mom now being able to drink- is a party AFTER the little munchkin has arrived; the baby is introduced to friends and family and the boys are definitely invited to participate.

5. Gender Reveal

A Gender Reveal party is probably one of the most popular trends of the last couple of years. In this type of party, only the baker knows the babies sex -the sonogram is sent directly to him in a sealed envelope- and both the parents and guests discover together the sex when cutting the cake; which has either blue or pink filling inside. This is a very thrilling and exciting type of party and is great for parents that want to make sure they include their family and friends in the great surprise of discovering the babies gender.

TrueMen Thursdays: Bombino

Title

My husband is an avid music collector. As a guitarist himself, he's always looking for innovative and fresh talent from all around the world. His new favorite, Bombino, has not only fascinated me with his music, but touched me with his story. Omara "Bombino" Moctar, whose given name is Goumar Almoctar, was born in Tidene, Niger, an encampment of nomadic Tuaregs located about 80 kilometers to the northeast of Agadez.

In 1984, a drought hit Niger and Mali, forcing people to leave the countryside and move into the cities or migrate to Algeria and Libya. Eventually, Tuareg communities in those countries organized a rebellion to defend their rights, as they felt overlooked and underrepresented by local governments. Before the fighting began, rebels started teaching the community about the goals of the rebellion through song and the recently adopted guitar. One day, some relatives arrived at Bombino's home from the front lines of the rebellion, carrying with them two guitars that they left behind for a few months. Bombino began to teach himself to play the guitars, plucking out notes in imitation of the songs he had heard. Eventually, after the fights were over, Bombino decided to return to Niger, where he played with a number of local bands. As his legend grew, a Spanish documentary film crew helped Bombino record his first album, which became a local hit on Agadez radio. The success of the album validated Bombino's choice to make a career out of music.

Although just thirty years old, Bombino's life and travels have exposed him to the problems facing his people. He has taken on the mission of helping the Tuareg community achieve equal rights, peace, maintain their rich cultural heritage and promote education. He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic, all of which he speaks fluently. "We fought for our rights," remarks Bombino, "But we have seen that guns are not the solution. We need to change our system. Our children must go to school…"

Listen to Bombino's new album (which is marvelous!) and read a little more about his story here!
